In a surprise check conducted at the Central jail in Colvale on Saturday, crime branch police, along with Colvale cops, seized nine mobile phones, some phone chargers and tobacco from the jail premises.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Keshav Ram Chaurasia, who is also the Inspector General, prisons, and North Goa Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Gupta, who is also holding the charge of SP, crime branch, were present during the search operation.

Sources said a total of nine mobile phones and a few phone chargers were attached during the search operation that lasted for around two hours. A few tobacco packets, which were also found in the cells, have been seized. Senior officials at the jail said such surprise checks will continue in the future.

Last year, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had told the state legislative assembly that security at the Central jail in Colvale would be tightened and smuggling of mobile phones into the jail premises would be stopped completely. Sawant had also said that, if necessary, mobile jammers would be installed in the jail.
