The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said that it had no role in the protest organised by the Bajrang Dal activists Friday night, outside the residence of the noted Konkani writer, Uday Bhembre, over his statement about Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his links with Goa.
State spokesperson of the BJP, Giriraj Pai Vernekar told The Navhind Times that, “The protest was a spontaneous reaction from society against Bhembre’s distortion of history and his insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who is revered by Hindus.”
“Shivaji Maharaj was known for his just nature, and history does not show his forces ever holding women captive,” Pai Vernekar said, adding, “I urge people like Bhembre to exercise restraint when speaking about icons like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and to avoid making baseless comments or spreading falsehoods that can hurt people’s sentiments.”
The state BJP spokesperson further maintained, “Such irresponsible statements create unrest and disturb social harmony, and therefore, must be avoided at all costs.”
