Expressing confidence that Goa would be among the top states in the education sector, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said that the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has maintained strong academic standards, with its pass percentage rising from 63 per cent to 98 per cent over the years.

Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio, said the Goa Board has set a benchmark in the preparation of question papers. He also said that they are designed to equip students to face competitive examinations in the future.

“Guidance for students should primarily come from teachers rather than parents, as educators are better placed to assess students’ academic abilities and skills. Such an approach will help build a more balanced and inclusive education system, allowing students to pursue diverse career paths and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

Sawant said teachers need to identify students’ talents at an early stage, adding that not every child can or should become a doctor or an engineer
and that such expectations should not be imposed
on students.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Goa Board premises following aesthetic and visual upgradation, held during the Board’s golden jubilee year. Sawant said teachers play a crucial role in recognising individual abilities and guiding students, and that proper mentoring helps students shape careers based on their strengths and interests.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, Director of Education Shailesh Zingade and Goa Board Chairman Bhagirath Shetye were present at the event.

Khaunte said the goal of Viksit Bharat can be achieved through proper guidance for students. Shetye said the
redesigned Goa Board campus offers a modern, inspiring and learner-centric environment, reflecting the Board’s
commitment to innovation, inclusivity and quality education.
