The death of a sixth student at the BITS Pilani-Goa campus within a span of
one year has drawn serious concerns from various sections in state.
Cortalim MLA Antonio Vas said the situation is “deeply disturbing” and no longer tolerable, while Congress leader Olencio Simoes has called for an immediate and independent CBI
inquiry.
In a letter addressed to the Director of BITS Pilani-Goa Campus, Suman Kundu, Vas expressed shock over the incident and questioned the effectiveness of remedial measures previously assured by the institute’s adAministration.
The MLA said during a visit to the campus in September 2025, the Director had assured that steps such as installation of CCTV cameras, enhanced security checks, and appointment of counsellors had been implemented to prevent further tragedies. The letter also reflects strong public sentiment, with the MLA warning that there are demands for the institution to be shut down or shifted outside the Cortalim constituency if corrective measures are not urgently implemented.
Congress leader Simoes described the incident as “shocking and disgraceful” and a reflection of
a systemic collapse in governance and administration in Goa. Simoes rejected the so-called inquiries conducted by the South Goa Collector, calling them “eye-wash exercises” with no tangible outcomes. He urged the Chief Minister to treat the matter as a top priority and intervene immediately to ensure strict action.
