The state government on Thursday declared the newly established Tuem hospital as a linked facility of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim.
In a notification issued, the government said, “In pursuance of the decision of the government to strengthen healthcare facilities in the northern region of the state, the government is pleased to declare the newly established hospital facility at Tuem as a linked facility to GMC, Bambolim.”
The notification stated that, following this decision, the Public Health Department will provide the services of doctors from GMC as well as the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) to the facility for the delivery of healthcare services.
“The orders of deployment of doctors to cater to patients visiting this facility shall be issued separately,” it said, adding that the dean of GMC and the Director of Health Services shall take necessary action for effective implementation, and ensure smooth coordination between the institutions to provide healthcare facilities to the region.
The government’s announcement comes as a major relief to the Pernem residents, who, for the past two years have been staging protests under the banner of Tuem Hospital Kruti Samiti.
They have been demanding that the facility be made operational and staffed with medical, allied and support personnel, with priority to eligible candidates from Pernem taluka.
The samiti recently organised a five-day hunger chain protest followed by a mega torchlight protest that saw the participation of nearly 2,000 people.
