A woman arrested by Calangute police in connection with the murder of an Udupi-based water sports businessman, Sandeep Salian, has been remanded in five days in police custody.
Akshata M K alias Rupashree, who was absconding, was nabbed in Bengaluru with the assistance of Karnataka police and brought to Goa on Friday on a transit remand and w produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court, Mapusa that sent her to five days in police custody.
Sources said that a team of Calangute police left for Bengaluru on Wednesday after receiving information that the accused woman had fled there. Salian, a resident of Malpe in Udupi district, had travelled to Goa on June 29 with his siblings and friends for a holiday.
Police said the victim had allegedly fallen into a honey trap involving the accused woman, who is suspected of targeting affluent people visiting casinos by seducing and defrauding them.
Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased’s brother, Chetan Suvarna, Calangute police registered a case under Sections 123, 309 and 103(1) in connection with the murder.
The body was sent to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, for a postmortem on Wednesday. As doctors could not ascertain the exact cause of death, samples have been preserved for forensic analysis to determine whether poisoning or any other foul play was involved. Calangute police are continuing their investigation.
