Panaji: Activist Rama Kankonkar, who was arrested by the Panaji police for allegedly making objectionable statements against the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, has been granted conditional bail by a court. Kankonkar was arrested on Friday.

On Saturday, Kankonkar was remanded in judicial custody and sent to the central jail, Colvale. However, owing to deteriorating health conditions, he was shifted to North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa. Police had registered an FIR against Kankonkar on February 19. The complaint was lodged by the police on behalf of the state. Police said that on February 19, at Azad Maidan, Panaji, Kankonkar, while addressing the media, made objectionable statements against Sawant. Police had said that Kankonkar committed “public mischief” and also committed criminal intimidation. Kankonkar also provoked the public against Sawant and threatened to bury Sawant alive, police had said.

On February 19, Kankonkar was referring to an incident in Sancoale, claiming that a migrant had threatened voters from a panchayat of burying them alive. “If you want to bury alive, first it should be the Home Minister who is also the Chief Minister… because he should be protecting us. The law and order has collapsed in the state,” Kankonkar had said.

Meanwhile, his condition is stable and is kept under observation, said sources.
