Villas turn IPL betting hubs; police crackdown nets 10

In two separate raids, the Crime Branch busted an IPL cricket betting racket and arrested 10 accused persons on Thursday midnight. Police seized 95 mobile phones, eight laptops, 77 SIM cards, 18 debit cards and other items worth around Rs 28 lakh.

The raids were conducted at two villas located in Ribandar and Kadamba Plateau, Old Goa.

Police arrested Digvijay Devangan (29), Kamal Singh (22), Bhupendra Singh (20), natives of Chhattisgarh, Manish Surhota (21) and Sameer (20) from Haryana, Gautam Singh Paritur (28) and Karan Chauhan (20) from Uttar Pradesh, and Dhruv Ciavwani (20), a native of Madhya Pradesh. In the second case, police arrested Lucky Kashyap (27) and Karan Aryan (29), both from Madhya Pradesh.

In both cases, the accused were operating through ‘Reddi888’and ‘Fairplay’ platforms, Crime Branch SP Rahul Gupta said.

Referring to the first case at Ribandar, Gupta said eight accused persons were arrested.

“Forty-eight mobile phones, four laptops, 28 SIM cards of different service providers, 18 debit cards, cheque books, pass books, cash of Rs 2 lakh and other material was seized,” said Gupta, adding that “total value of the attached property is around Rs 8 lakh.”

Referring to the second case, Gupta said that while the raid at Ribandar was in progress, “additional inputs were received that a similar activity was going on at a villa in Kadamba Plateau. Accordingly, one more team of Crime Branch was formed and the raid was conducted which led to the arrest of two persons,” said Gupta.

In this case, police seized 47 mobile phones, four laptops, one tab, 49 SIM cards, one TV and seven passbooks. The total value of the attached property is around Rs 20 lakh, police said.

Gupta said the raids were assisted by SP Jivba Dalvi, PI Vikas Deykar and PI Arjun Sangodkar of the Crime Branch.
