Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar, on Friday, stated that the government would implement a strategic water management plan for state dams to ensure that only the required quantity of water is released.
Speaking to reporters at Arlem after inaugurating the Adharsh Auto Care Centre, Shirodkar said that the Salaulim dam reservoir was currently around 70 per cent full and added that continued rainfall would bring it to full capacity.
“We have resolved to manage water resources by releasing only the required quantities. We intend to pump water from the Kushavati River to supply the industrial areas of Verna and Vasco, which will alleviate the demand on the Sanguem supply,” he said.
He stated that the proposed pumping station would be located at Quepem.
He further stated that of the 70 MLD of water released, nearly 30 MLD is lost to seepage before reaching Davorlim and Verna.
“This wastage will be curtailed. It is imperative that we implement comprehensive water management across all state dams to ensure both quantitative and qualitative supply,” he said.
The Minister for Water Resources also said that the move is intended to strengthen water security for industrial use without placing additional pressure on the Salaulim reservoir.
Shirodkar stated that the delayed onset of the monsoon had highlighted the need for water harvesting projects, particularly after regulated water supply in several areas. The gross storage capacity of Salaulim Dam reservoir is 234.36 million cubic metres (MCM), while its live storage capacity is 227.16 MCM or approximately 8 TMC ft. Its full reservoir level is 41.15 mts or 135 feet.
During the inaugural programme, Shirodkar also urged the Goa Agriculture Marketing Board to prioritise export opportunities for cashew nuts, coconuts and other products.
He commended the board members and Adharsh Society founder Prakash Velip for his contribution to society through various enterprises.
Addressing the gathering, Velip stated that the organisation planned to expand its business operations into the tourism and education sectors in Goa.
