In an attempt to protect the state’s wildlife sanctuaries from getting littered by visitors, and to promote eco-friendly tourism, the Goa government has decided to place a strict ban on carrying alcohol and plastic bags at waterfall sites across the state.
Making an announcement, chairperson of Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC) and Poriem MLA Deviya Rane said checks will be carried out at the sites and entrances to waterfalls in forest areas.
“Fines will be imposed on those who violate the rules,” she said. Rane further said garbage bins and plastic pickers have been deployed to ensure cleanliness.
As the government has been promoting hinterland tourism, the numbers of tourists and visitors to such places have been increasing, with people visiting waterfalls located in various remote parts of the state for the last few years.
“In order to preserve our sanctuaries and forests, we must encourage responsible tourism. Alcohol and plastic at waterfalls are a serious threat to the environment and will not be tolerated,” the GFDC chairperson said.
Speaking to media on the sidelines of an event at Campal-Panaji, Rane
clarified that there are no restrictions on visiting waterfalls in Goa. She assured visitors that GFDC manages key sites like Dudhsagar, Mainapi, Savari and Pali waterfalls, providing facilities and enforcing safety guidelines.
“At GFDC, our focus is to make Goa’s waterfalls not only accessible but also keep them safe, clean, eco-friendly and enriching for every visitor. We remain committed to preserving these natural treasures while promoting responsible tourism that benefits both, people and the environment,” she said.
Rane said the ban on alcohol and plastic at Goa’s waterfalls is part of an initiative to curb littering and preserve the natural environment. The move aims to maintain cleanliness and enhance the experience for visitors while protecting the region’s ecological balance.
