A 500mm water pipeline supplying Saligao, Sangolda, and Guirim ruptured on Saturday night during underground power cable work, leading to wastage of hundreds of litres of water and temporary disruption in supply. The rupture occurred on the service road near the Monte de Guirim underpass, with repairs completed on Sunday afternoon.
According to sources, an electricity department contractor was carrying out underground cable-laying work at Monte de Guirim when the pipeline was damaged. Large quantities of water gushed out, submerging roads and creating a flood-like situation in the surrounding areas. The force of the water also washed away mud from nearby fields, affecting local farmers. Public Works Department (PWD) officials were alerted and promptly cut off the water supply to prevent further wastage.
However, clearing the
water took time, delaying the commencement of
repair work.
Residents in Guirim, Saligao, and Sangolda faced a disruption in supply overnight.
Repair work, undertaken by a contractor, was completed by 3 pm on Sunday, and water was restored to the affected areas later in the evening. Local farmers were upset over the damage caused to their fields and questioned officials about the incident, contributing to delays in the repair process.
“Our water pipeline ruptured at Guirim last night. We completed repair work on Sunday afternoon and later released water to the affected areas,” a PWD official said.
