The Higher Secondary Teachers’ Association Goa (HISTAG) has backed the state government’s decision to commence the new academic year from April 1, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
A resolution in support of the transition was unanimously approved at HISTAG’s annual general body meeting, following a proposal by its president Babaji Sawant, who said teachers were committed to strengthening the education system for the holistic development of students.
HISTAG described the shift as a progressive step toward a structured and uniform academic framework benefiting students, teachers, and institutions. While Goa traditionally begins its academic year in June, transitioning to April aligns it with national and international education systems. The association said the synchronisation could improve coordination with national educational reforms and the structured implementation of NEP recommendations.
In a press statement, Sawant said that NEP 2020 aims to promote a stress-free and student-friendly education system.
“HISTAG commends the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) for conducting teacher training programmes that equip educators with the necessary knowledge and skills for this transition. Many higher secondary schools, particularly those offering Science streams, have informally begun preparatory classes in April for years. Formalising this as part of the academic calendar ensures consistency and uniformity across institutions,” the statement read.
At its AGM, HISTAG also discussed plans to introduce several initiatives, including a mega educational and cultural festival exclusively for higher secondary teachers.
Tentatively scheduled for April 29, the festival aims to encourage academic collaboration, promote cultural expression, and facilitate professional networking among educators. Teacher Ramkrishna Bhat has been appointed as the convenor for the event.
