Mapusa: A memorandum has been issued to the canteen in-charge of the Central Jail at Colvale, who is also the Deputy Superintendent, for allegedly failing to deposit around Rs 31,000 of canteen discounts into the Prison Welfare Fund. The jail officials concerned have been directed to deposit the cash into the fund before submitting any explanation.

According to sources, the Superintendent of the Central Jail at Colvale issued the memorandum after it was found that the canteen in-charge had received discounts from suppliers while purchasing goods, but the discount amount for June and July was not deposited in the welfare fund.

The Deputy Superintendent has been directed to submit an explanation within 48 hours. Following the written reply, the matter will be taken up before the Inspector General of Prisons, who will decide the necessary course of action.

Senior prison officials said, “Prima facie it appears to be misappropriation of funds as the discounted amount was not deposited into the welfare fund. Today we have instructed officials concerned to first deposit the cash into the account before replying to a memorandum.”
