Social activist Rama Kankonkar on Saturday said the police investigation into brutal assault on him at Caranzalem last month is completely politicised, and called for an independent probe.
He suspected the link of two top politicians to the assault.
“When everyone was asking about the mastermind, why didn’t the investigating officer ever ask that question to me?” asked Kankonkar, who was discharged from Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, where he was under treatment after
the assault.
He was brutally attacked by a gang at Caranzalem three weeks ago.
During the three-hour recording of the statement, the investigation officer never asked him whether he suspected the involvement of any politician. After the recorded statement was read out by him as per the rules, the officer appeared reluctant to put the name of a minister.
He also said there has been no proper cooperation from the police in investigating the case.
“Hence I have no trust in their investigation,” the social activist said, adding that the probe should be conducted by any agency other than that comes under the state government.
He said normally, the police would also try to find out why certain statements are made by the assailants during the attack. Here not only they have not gone into those aspects but even have not probed for whom the assailant had recorded the assault on him.
As reported, one of the assailants had been seen recording the assault on the activist.
Kankonkar said that he is ready to give his statement before a magistrate. “If any information is required in detail, I am ready to speak before a magistrate,” he said.
Stating that he has no personal enmity with the assailants at all, Kankonkar said that a wrong perception was created by the police by leaking information to the media.
When asked about the mastermind behind the brutal attack, Kankonkar said, “To tell you who is the mastermind, me and my wife were not present at the meeting of planning by the mastermind. If there is a mastermind, then there is a need for the police to tell about it.”
“But if you ask me whom I have my doubts on and who could be behind this, then in the past I have given my statement on how the attack has happened, and in connection with the police department and about the involvement of the police,” he said.
“I have already taken the names of whom I have my doubts on, and I am once again taking their names,” said Kankonkar referring to state’s two top politicians.
The activist said that everyone knows who the assailant wearing a pink shirt is, and from which assembly constituency he comes from.
“Why are you spoiling our MLA’s name?” was the question put forth by one of the assailants during the assault,” he recalled.
Kankonkar said the police have said that they have not yet recovered the weapon that was used to assault him.
“They have not got the knife and the gun and also the mobile that was used. My statement is made public, but the statement of the accused does not come out. It indicates that this has happened in coordination with the police. Right from the time of my first attack the police have been compromised,” he said.
