Police recover ‘stolen’ goods

Panaji: The crime branch has arrested Janardan Khorate, who is the prime accused in the case pertaining to the attempted forceful eviction of a family from a house in Anjuna.

A complaint was filed by Bronwynn Sinary, a resident of St Michael’s Waddo, Anjuna, alleging that an attempt to forcibly evict the family was made on February 8.

The complaint had stated that Khorate, along with 15-20 unidentified people, formed an unlawful assembly and forcibly entered the property in the complainant’s absence.

They stole household items, including a washing machine, printers, a laptop, suitcases, electronic goods, and personal belongings, amounting to around Rs 3 lakh.

On February 10, the Anjuna police registered an FIR under various sections of the BNS, including criminal intimidation, theft, house-trespass, and rioting.

On February 13, the investigation was transferred to the crime branch.

Further investigation revealed that the complainant’s maid was abducted from the scene. As a result, charges of abduction, criminal conspiracy, and robbery were adduced in the case.

Three individuals—Rakesh Raha, Parshuram Gawas, and Vickey Naik—were arrested and later released on conditional bail by the Mapusa court.

Khorate’s anticipatory bail application was rejected earlier this week by the additional sessions court in Mapusa. Hence he was arrested on February 19.

The police confirmed that the majority of the stolen property has been recovered.

According to the police, security guards from a private agency were   also allegedly involved in the case. The Aryan Security Agency, based in Mapusa, has been found to lack the necessary permissions under the Private Security Agency Regulation Act. Hence the crime branch plans to notify the authorities concerned to revoke the agency’s licence.

The police have formed teams to track down the remaining absconding accused, and efforts to locate them are ongoing.
