Several Konkani groups gathered on Saturday to condemn the incident in which Bajrang Dal members confronted writer and former legislator Uday Bhembre at his residence on Friday evening over remarks he had made in a recent video about
Shivaji Maharaj.
Calling for immediate government action, the groups have also scheduled a meeting on Sunday to denounce the incident.
Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) president Ratnamala Divkar said, “We strongly condemn the way Udaybab was treated. The government’s inaction on the matter is unacceptable. We have every right to express our opinions, just as others have the right to counter them. But showing up at his home and behaving in such a manner is wrong. Udaybab was referencing historical facts when he made those comments.”
The groups have urged the government to investigate the issue and will gather for a protest meeting on Sunday at 4.30 pm in front of Bhembre’s house in Margao.
Konkani group member Prakash Naik said, “The Konkani community will not stay silent. We stand firmly behind Udaybab and strongly oppose this act. If Rama Kankonkar could be arrested, then the person who led the group of Bajrang Dal members should also be investigated”
. Why is the government still silent?
Divkar also called on Goans to come together in condemning the incident and to safeguard the state’s unique social fabric, which has long thrived on harmony and mutual respect.
