Shock defeats

Germany’s shock exit from the World Cup tells us that upsets are a rich part of human affairs. Paraguay have bundled out Germany from the World Cup, talk about a David toppling Goliath. There are several upsets in recorded history, the Pakistanis being dealt a crushing defeat at Longewala, Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson, the movie ‘Parasite’ eclipsing many heavyweight contenders for the Oscars, BJP losing Ayodhya, Kodak getting bankrupted by the digital photography it invented. Historical turnarounds and shock defeats, only look like they happened overnight. The penalty shootout win, the election drubbing, the Oscar trophy, the product launch, are all usually a part of a longer feedback loop. And more often than not, the churn is for the better. It is “creative destruction”. Old value gets destroyed so new value can emerge, this is a universal truth. Existing coalitions give way to emergent identities. The fall of the Berlin Wall was a corollary of Soviet communism collapsing. The ‘Parasite’ win only announced that intelligent Korean cinema was right up there with classic Hollywood. Morocco’s run in the 2022 Cup looked like a surreal dream, but it was reward for investment in coaching, academies and the enormous pool of talent playing for European clubs.

Women’s safety

I wish to draw attention to the alarming rise in crimes against women in Goa. Recent reports and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2024 data indicate that Goa has recorded one of the highest rape crime rates in the country. Reports of 163 sexual assault cases in 2025 have further intensified concerns regarding women’s safety and security. These incidents are not merely statistics; each case represents a shattered life, a traumatised family and a serious failure of governance. Women deserve to feel safe not only within their homes, but also on streets, beaches, workplaces, educational institutions and all public spaces. Unfortunately, many women today feel insecure while travelling alone, especially at night, due to inadequate police patrolling, drunken misbehaviour, poor street lighting and lack of strict action against offenders. Goa is internationally known as a peaceful tourist destination that attracts thousands of visitors every year. However, an increase in incidents of harassment and assault are damaging the state’s reputation and creating fear among both, tourists and local residents. Silence and inaction will only encourage offenders further. The authorities must take immediate corrective measures. Awareness campaigns promoting respect for women and gender sensitivity should also be conducted regularly. At the same time, civil society, religious leaders, educational institutions and citizens must unite to demand accountability and meaningful reforms.

Forced experiment

Turning 1.4 billion citizens into unwitting guinea pigs for E20 fuel blending is a massive administrative overreach. While cutting import bills is vital, forcing a 20% ethanol blend onto 2.3 crore incompatible vehicles is economically devastating for daily commuters. Depriving motorists of standard fuel alternatives ruins complex engines, turning hard-earned vehicles into scrap metal. It is true that green progress demands infrastructural readiness, consumer choice and public consent – not a forced experiment that blends our petrol while compounding our economic sorrow. To remedy this, the government must immediately mandate the availability of regular, unblended fuel options alongside E20 at all petrol pumps.

Avian spectacle

In a rare and captivating avian spectacle, a flock of Greater Flamingos has reportedly made an unexpected appearance at the Santa Cruz bandh during the monsoon season, delighting residents, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. These graceful migratory birds are usually seen in the region during the cooler winter months, making their off-season arrival an unusual and a noteworthy event. The sight of the elegant birds, with their long pink legs, curved necks and striking plumage, has transformed the water body into a picturesque haven for nature lovers. Greater Flamingos are migratory birds that travel thousands of kilometres across countries and continents in search of food, suitable habitats and favourable environmental conditions. The changing weather patterns and the effects of global warming may have influenced their unexpected presence during monsoon. While the flamingos’ arrival has brought joy, it has also drawn attention to the condition of the Santa Cruz bandh. The water body is plagued by pollution, with plastic waste, garbage and untreated filth posing a serious threat to its fragile ecosystem. It is imperative that no migratory bird falls victim to polluted waters. Protecting wetlands and water bodies is essential for preserving biodiversity and ensuring that migratory birds continue to find refuge during their long journeys. These magnificent birds have delivered a silent yet powerful message that our lakes, wetlands and water bodies must remain clean and pollution-free throughout the year, not only when migratory birds are expected to arrive.
