The Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) has demanded an inquiry into the reservation of a lift at Paryatan Bhavan, Panaji, exclusively for Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
It questioned how many MPs and MLAs visit the building daily to justify such special treatment.
The association has also sought strict action against the officer responsible for issuing the order.
“Why should the lift be reserved only for MPs and MLAs when people with disabilities and senior citizens struggle to access government offices in the same building?” asked Avelino D’Sa, president of DRAG.
Paryatan Bhavan houses several important government offices, including that of the Assistant Director of Transport, the Directorate of Tourism, and the Goa Tourism Development Corporation.
“I had to wait longer for the single lift to arrive. The building has five floors, hence two lifts were installed. Many government offices which have lots of public visiting are in that building. In the absence of one lift, the load falls on the single lift and people have to wait longer,” he said.
