Ponda

A massive fire broke out at the Electricity Department’s Curti sub-station on Thursday afternoon, causing an estimated loss of around Rs 10 lakh and leading to a temporary power outage in parts of Ponda and the Verna Industrial Development
Corporation (IDC).

The incident, described by officials as “probably one of the most massive fires” in the last five to six years at the sub-station, occurred at around 11.40 am.

According to department officials, the fire was triggered by a short circuit reported in the feeder, which caused the central 33 KV transformer to “flash out” and burst into flames. Firefighting teams battled the blaze for nearly half an hour before bringing
it under control.

The damaged transformer was critical, supplying power to areas of South Goa, including Ponda town and Verna IDC. Despite the scale of the damage, officials acted swiftly by transferring the affected load to an alternative feeder. Power supply was restored within an hour of the incident.

Sub-station officials said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. They assured that the system will be fully operational
by Friday evening.
