Giving a lift to the state, it was announced at the India Maritime Week 2025 that Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is the only accredited green port in India.
The green accreditation, which is for the operational areas of the port, is valid until June 2028.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who attended the event, said the port’s green certification ties in with the government’s plan to sustainably tap the blue economy.
MPA chairman Dr N Vinod Kumar pointed out that several ports
in the country have implemented green initiatives but none so far have been officially recognised as green.
“The certification is for implementing the 3MW solar power plant which completely meets the energy requirements of the port, the covered dome at the JSW berth to handle coal operations, conservation of water, and green ship incentives,” explained Dr Vinod Kumar.
He disclosed that the port in the last five years achieved investment of Rs 1,016 crore towards projects such as the solar plant, the upcoming cruise terminal, etc.
“In the coming years, investments will be multiple times more,” said the MPA chairman.
During the Goa session at the summit, MPA signed 13 memoranda of understanding with a total investment of approximately Rs 2,800 crore.
The agreements signed by MPA at the summit include the MoU with India Port and Railway Corporation Ltd for the development of Vasco Bay and construction of a road overbridge (Rs 1,080 crore), MoU with International Seaport Dredging Pvt Ltd for deepening the approach channel for capsize vessels (Rs 500 crore), Gammon Engineers for the redevelopment of berth 9 (Rs 500 crore), Cisterna for setting up a LPG facility, among others.
MPA officials inked agreements soon after the state session that had ‘Blue meets Green’ as the theme.
“The port has always been known as the golden gateway to Goa and now it has been added with the colour green,” Kumar said.
