New Delhi: Nine people, including women and a minor girl, were hospitalised with breathing difficulties after they were rescued from a fire at a four-storey residential building in Delhi’s Shahdara area on Sunday, officials said.

According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), they received a call at 12.03 am informing about the blaze at D-45 in Mansarover Park. Three fire tenders and a water bowser were rushed to the spot. Subsequently, nine nine people trapped on different floors of the building were rescued and shifted to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital after they complained of breathing difficulties caused by smoke inhalation.

The injured were identified as Vanshika (20), Tanishka Soni (19), Durgesh (49), Yogesh Verma (50), Raj Rani (65), Arun Garg (48), Ananya (12), Renu Garg (19), and Prateek Garg (19).

The fire was later brought under control, officials said.

According to a senior DFS official, the fire had erupted in the domestic articles kept at the ground floor parking lot of the building.

Meanwhile, Mansarover Park Police said the fire was likely caused by a short circuit in a motor. “The fire, reportedly caused by a short circuit in a motor, broke out in the parking area of the building and remained confined there,” read the police statement.

Police and DFS teams responded promptly, extinguished the fire, and safely rescued nine residents from the upper floors.

“All the rescued persons were shifted to GTB Hospital as they complained of breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation. They were treated and subsequently discharged. No casualties or burn injuries were reported,” the statement read.

Several videos of the rescue work by police and DFS has gone viral on social media platforms.
