Thirty nine per cent of the 2.20 lakh Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) bank accounts in Goa are inoperative as of July 31, 2025, informed Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
In data tabled in the Lower House in reply to an unstarred question, the ministry stated that there are 2,20,252 PM Jan Dhan bank accounts in Goa of which 85,993 are inoperative.
The disclosure highlights concerns over effective utilisation of the flagship financial inclusion scheme, which was launched to provide universal access to banking services, including savings accounts, credit, insurance and pensions.
While PMJDY has significantly expanded banking penetration, the high proportion of inactive accounts in Goa raises questions about financial literacy, banking outreach, and the need to encourage accountholders to actively use these facilities.
Government launches various specific campaigns from time to time for the promotion of enrolment under various schemes as well as for issues like activation of inoperative accounts, the House was told.
The minister said recently a gram panchayat-level saturation campaign has been launched across the nation from July 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025, with Re-KYC of ‘inactive PMJDY accounts’ being a key focus area of the campaign. Re-KYC stands for Renewal of ‘Know Your Customer’. It is a process wherein banks update a customer’s personal details and documents to ensure their records remain accurate and up-to-date.
