The North District Hospital morgue will undergo a full renovation and
infrastructure upgrade under the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC),
with plans to create a system for updates every
seven to eight years, GSIDC chairman and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said
on Tuesday.
Lobo and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza inspected the hospital’s mortuary, which has long required improvement. Hospital medical superintendent Dr Varsha Munj and GSIDC officials were also present.
D’Souza said the morgue issue has been raised for the last three Assembly sessions.
“Currently, we have 12 compartments in the morgue, and they are working. Today the chairman of GSIDC visited and under him, we can be assured that the hospital will get a full-fledged new morgue with increased capacity from 12 to 20-24 slots so that bodies can be preserved from Bardez, Pernem and Bicholim,” he said.
Lobo said residents of Bardez and Pernem have faced difficulties due to limited capacity at the mortuary. “Over the last week, I had a detailed discussion with the CM and Health Minister regarding urgent need to upgrade the morgue facilities, which caters to the entire North belt. A go-ahead has now been given,” he said.
Lobo said that as Chairman of GSIDC, he will ensure that the morgue is fully renovated and re-infrastructured under GSIDC, with a system to upgrade it every seven to eight years.
“Even necessary provision with a good exhaust system will also be made,” he said.
Lobo added that roof
repair works for the
hospital would also be undertaken and the upgrades will
be aligned with the broader hospital improvement plan.
