The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its weather warning for Goa from yellow to orange for Tuesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places and moderate to heavy rain across most parts of the state.
The alert follows the activation of an east-west trough running from north-central Karnataka to south coastal Andhra Pradesh at 5.8 km above mean sea level, which has intensified monsoon activity over the region.
Heavy rain was recorded across Goa on Monday, with similar conditions expected over the next 24 hours. The monsoon, active over the past week, has led to widespread rainfall across the state, resulting in a marginal seasonal surplus.
Rainfall data recorded during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on July 21 shows that Mapusa (72.0 mm) and Sanguem (70.1 mm) received the highest rainfall, both in the “heavy” category. Moderate rainfall was recorded in Margao (62.0 mm), Quepem (60.0 mm), Pernem (53.8 mm), and Panaji (47.6 mm). Canacona recorded 15.2 mm.
Since June 1, Goa has received 1643.4 mm of rainfall, slightly above the seasonal average of 1631.4 mm — a surplus of 0.7%. South Goa recorded 1690.8 mm of rain against a normal of 1601.5 mm (a 5.6% surplus), while North Goa recorded 1589.8 mm against a normal of 1665.3 mm (a 4.5% deficit).
The IMD’s extended forecast predicts continued wet conditions through July 27. From July 23 to 27, the state is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall daily, with heavy to very heavy rain likely at isolated locations. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea due to high wave alerts and gusty winds.
