Exposing the low side of crime detection rate in Goa, government figures pointed out that over 14 per cent kidnapping and abduction cases remained undetected, and that  6 per cent rape cases  also remained unsolved in 2024.

As per the government data,  30  murders were reported last year in which the police achieved 100 per cent detection.  The police also achieved 100 per cent detection in 29 cases of attempt to murder, 13 robbery cases and three dacoity cases.

However,  of  112 rape cases, the police achieved detection in 105 cases, while in kidnapping and abduction front, the police achieved detection  in 78 cases out of 91 in 2024.

Referring to efforts taken by the police to reduce serious crimes, the police said that regular day and night police patrolling is maintained, adding that  they have nurtured sources for intelligence gathering.

To push up the conviction rate, investigation officers are regularly briefed on conducting in-depth investigation and seeking legal opinion from the directorate of prosecution before chargesheets are filed.

Training is imparted to investigation officers to file effective chargesheets, in coordination with the prosecution director.

The police said that women helpline-1091, Emergency Response Service System (ERSS)-112, WhatsApp helpline-7875756177, senior citizen helpline-1090 function round the clock at the state police control room, Panaji, and that distress calls received are routed to officials concerned to attend the same in quickest possible time.

The department  launched the ‘Pink Force’ in December 2021 and presently 10 vehicles are available with the  Force; the procurement of 13 new vehicles is under process.

Women helpdesk is functional at all  police stations where women  officers and other female staffers are deployed round the clock to redress the grievances of women victims, the police said.

Besides,  a dedicated women police station  functions in Panaji.  Also, one unit each on anti-human trafficking, women and child protection  function in Margao and Panaji.

The police said awareness programmes are conducted in collaboration with NGOs for the students of schools and colleges on crime against children, existing laws to protect child rights and sensitise them on good and bad touch, etc as also to facilitate the prevention of crime against children.

According to the police, all police stations have child friendly room, and one child welfare police officer.

The police conducted state-level conference for NGOs, stakeholders in judiciary,  doctors, police officers, etc. on human trafficking, child labour, prostitution, child sexual abuse, etc.
