Following the armed dacoity at a flat in Chamundi Arcade at Baina, Vasco early Tuesday morning, several politicians visited the victim family, expressing shock over an incident they said had occurred for the first time in the town.
Mormugao BJP MLA Sankalp Amonkar said the dacoits appeared to have studied the area, entered the colony from the rear, and even latched the neighbours’ doors. “The family is well known and has been living there since pre-Liberation. I have spoken to police officials. I will also speak to the Chief Minister to give justice to them,” he said.
“He was nearly murdered by the dacoits. Nayak had recently undergone angioplasty,” Amonkar said.
Congress leader Nandadeep Raut said the incident in a compounded complex located in the middle of the market indicated a collapse of law and order in the state.
He said recent cases in Dona Paula, Mapusa and now Vasco reflected a worsening situation. He also said that if Chief Minister Pramod Sawant could not handle the situation, he should
step down.
Raut said it was unfortunate that the victim, who was severely injured, was first taken to Sub-District Hospital at Chicalim, then to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), then again to the Chicalim hospital and later back to GMC.
Former chairperson and councillor of the Mormugao Municipal Council, Deepak Naik, said such an incident had happened in their area for the first time.
“We had learnt about such cases in Mapusa and Dona Paula. We are sure police will nab the accused. The day the accused are caught, they should be handed over to the public. They should not be sent to prison and then left out on bail,” he said.
Ward councillor Shraddha Naik said they had only seen such crimes on television. “This appears to be a well-planned attack. Such an incident should never be repeated. The CM should intervene and ensure the safety of citizens,” she said.
