Panaji: The state government has launched a scheme to provide financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh per month to registered organisations operating homes for senior citizens with chronic illnesses to cover operational costs. Organizations must have a minimum of 20 residents to qualify for funding and have to have been in operation for at least three years.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday handed over the first fund release letter to Dilasa, a charitable trust from Ponda, in the presence of Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar, and MLA Antonio Vas at the Mantralaya.
The scheme aims to support registered organizations, government bodies, and institutions that run homes for elderly individuals, particularly those suffering from conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, as well as those requiring palliative care.
“It is designed to facilitate operational support for homes dedicated to caring for senior citizens who need special attention due to their medical conditions,” said Phal Desai.
Only registered voluntary organisations, NGOs, and government bodies engaged in senior citizen welfare can apply, provided they have been operational for at least three years under relevant laws such as the Societies Registration Act or the Public Trust Act. Organisations must also have a minimum of 20 residents at the time of application to qualify for funding.
The scheme aims to ensure adequate shelter, nutritious food, and essential medical care for senior citizens while fostering a hygienic and supportive living environment.
