Navelim sarpanch Paul Pereira has sought urgent intervention from the district administration by
directing departments to restore village roads that have turned hazardous after extensive digging for underground power cabling, sewerage project, and laying of water pipelines.
In his letter to the authorities, Pereira said, “The roads which were hotmixed recently have now turned into bumpy, uneven, and dangerous stretches due to incomplete and poorly managed civil works. This situation has caused not only severe inconvenience but also led to a significant rise in accidents, injuries, and public frustration.”
He said that for months the electricity department carried out underground power cabling across the village. While the panchayat welcomed such projects in the interest of modernisation, the aftermath was “nothing short of a nightmare”, he added.
“Unfortunately, there have already been multiple cases of minor accidents and injuries, and this panchayat fears that a major incident may soon occur if immediate steps are not taken,” Pereira said.
He added that excavation and tunneling works for sewerage project further worsened conditions.
Post-completion, no substantial efforts were made to restore the stretches.
Pereira said departments had verbally assured the panchayat that restoration would be completed before monsoon, but nothing was done despite several dry spells in May and June.
Residents, he said,
are angry over the damage to vehicles and are
holding the panchayat
accountable.
He has called for immediate action at the district level.
