In view of the recent Supreme Court direction in the suo motu matter concerning stray dogs, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday held a joint meeting with representatives of all educational institutions
within its jurisdiction and officials from the KTC bus stand.
They were directed to ensure that adequate fencing, boundary walls, gates and other structural measures are in place to prevent the ingress of stray dogs into their premises.
The meeting, held on Monday evening, was presided over by nodal officer and municipal engineer II, Vishant Naik. Representatives of government, aided and non-aided pre-primary schools, primary and higher secondary schools, KTCL-Mapusa, official from the Women and Child Department (Bardez block), ADEI and others attended. Dr Stacy Sequeira, director of Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS), was also present.
During the meeting, institutions were briefed on the Supreme Court’s directions regarding stray dog issue. Naik asked each educational institution to appoint a nodal officer.
“We called a meeting of representatives of all primary, aided, non-aided schools, colleges, animal husbandry department, PWD, ADEI and KTCL wherein there was maximum attendance of school representatives. We have asked ADEI to appoint a nodal officer for all schools and submit the list to the municipality by Tuesday,” he said.
He added that “We have asked all institutions to ensure that proper fencing and gates. In case if not there, then the PWD needs to be informed so it can be done. All institutions are also asked to submit the number of dogs on the premises.”
He further said that, “data once collected will be compiled and sent to the DMA office.”
