Days after the attack on two police personnel by four people from Jharkhand at Betul, seven youths attacked police officers at Vaddem, leaving constable Naresh Gaikwad injured in the early hours of Tuesday. Six of the accused have been arrested, while one remains at large.

Sources said the incident occurred around 3.30 am when a police PCR vehicle on patrol noticed several youths standing on the road. When the officers questioned them about their presence at that time, the group allegedly began arguing and then assaulted the officers. Gaikwad and another officer in the vehicle sustained injuries.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurudas Kadam said that the PCR vehicle, attached to Vasco police station, was en route to the Chicalim sub-district hospital with a suspect for medical examination when it encountered the group obstructing the road.

Police have arrested Sameer Maniyar (23),
Rahul Karadi (23), Sanjay Karbantal (25), Raj Tarker (30), Amit Kamat (24), and Shrikant Rathod (34). The search for one accused is ongoing. A case has been registered under IPC sections 121, 132, 115(2), 352, 189 read with 3(5).

Congress’ Nandadeep Raut condemned the incident, calling the attack “truly disgraceful.” He said, “The youths responsible for the attack are from the Mangor Hill area. If law enforcement officers themselves are being attacked, it raises serious concerns about the safety of the general public.” Raut urged the police to conduct a fair investigation and take strict action without any political interference.

On July 24, six tourists from Tamil Nadu had allegedly assaulted one traffic police personnel at the Colva beach. The incident had allegedly occurred when the tourists tried to venture into the sea despite warnings from lifeguards.
