Six buffaloes were killed on Friday night after being hit by unidentified vehicles while grazing along the Manohar Parrikar bypass near Bhagatwada in Canacona. Locals, who assisted the night patrol police in clearing the carcasses, said the situation was dangerous as vehicles travelled at high speed on the unlit stretch.

Residents said most accidents here occur at night because the bypass lacks proper illumination, making it difficult for motorists to spot buffaloes on the road. Weeds along the roadside attract cattle, which are often struck by speeding vehicles. This is the second such accident this month involving stray cattle on the highway.

Activist Samrat Bhagat, who lives near the bypass, said that several two-wheeler riders have been injured after skidding due to the presence of cattle.

He added that vehicles have been damaged and animals have lost their lives, yet authorities have taken no concrete action.

Locals Vaibhav Phaldessai, Manzil Desai, Gaurav Naik Gaonkar, and Dattaraj Naik Gaonkar, who helped clear the road, suggested several measures to prevent further accidents, including fitting cattle with reflector belts, impounding them, installing warning signals, and ensuring proper
illumination.
