Punjab Kings cross sword against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1

Mullanpur: Shreyas Iyer’s inspiring leadership will face its toughest test yet when Punjab Kings host an equally upbeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League here on Thursday.

Having earned the cushion of a top-two finish, one can expect both teams to have a no holds barred approach knowing they will get another shot at reaching the final even if they come up short on the opening night of the play-offs.

Punjab Kings find themselves in unfamiliar territory having made the play-offs for the first time since 2014 but they are not carrying the baggage of the past in the Iyer-Ricky Ponting (head coach) era.

RCB, on the other hand, are way too familiar with heartbreaks of the knock-out stages and like every season, are hoping to end their title drought. In their own words, the job is only half done for both title contenders.

The Iyer-Ponting partnership has fuelled a remarkable turnaround for Punjab, transforming them into a consistent, confident outfit. Their well-balanced batting line-up, anchored by openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, has provided solid starts. Iyer and Josh Inglis have stabilized the middle, while Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh offer explosive finishes.

However, their bowling faces challenges. The absence of Marco Jansen, who was vital in both powerplay and death overs, is a major blow. Kyle Jamieson must step up, while Azmatullah Omarzai could be drafted in to fill Jansen’s void. The likely return of Yuzvendra Chahal from a finger injury alongside the dependable Harpreet Brar will bolster spin, while Arshdeep Singh remains Punjab’s pace spearhead.

RCB, buoyed by the return to fitness of Josh Hazlewood and availability of Tim David, appear close to full strength. The top order continues to shine with Phil Salt’s aggressive starts and Virat Kohli’s sublime form. Jitesh Sharma’s emergence has added teeth to the middle-order, addressing their traditional top-heavy imbalance.

RCB will also draw confidence from their win over Punjab at this venue earlier in the season. However, Punjab’s spirited defense of 111 against KKR at home last month signals their growing resilience.

With both sides eyeing a maiden title under new leadership cores, Thursday’s clash promises high stakes and high intensity, even with a safety net in place.
