Promotion race for second GPL spot now awaits GFA verdict

Mapusa: Candolim Sports Club were crowned champions of the GFA First Division League after playing out a goalless draw against St Savio Sports Club at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Thursday.

The result saw Candolim finish top of the table with 30 points from 12 matches and secure promotion to the Goa Professional League. St Savio, meanwhile, rose to third place with 27 points.

While the title race has been settled, the battle for the second promotion spot remains uncertain and now hinges on an off-field decision.

As it stands, Vagator PYSC occupy second place with 28 points following their 2-0 win over St Savio in Match No. 77. However, St Savio had lodged a protest alleging Vagator fielded an ineligible player during that fixture.

If the protest is upheld by the Goa Football Association, Vagator could face a points deduction that would potentially drop them to fifth place in the standings. Such a ruling would elevate St Savio to second place with 30 points, level on points with Candolim but behind on goal difference, enough to seal promotion to the Goa Professional League.

For now, the fate of the second promotion ticket rests not on the pitch, but with the GFA’s final verdict.
