Panaji: India’s Olympian shuttler Tanisha Crasto, virtually inaugurated the badminton tournament for Goan community in Qatar, the first held in two decades, drawing participation from 65 players across three categories—Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
In her address, she expressed joy at the initiative and encouraged participants to “enjoy every point and support each other.” Crasto represented India at the Paris Olympics and continues to be an inspiration to young Goans worldwide.
The event was marked by vibrant community participation and special moments, including an exhibition match between Indian Cultural Centre President A.P. Manikantan and nine-year-old Goan prodigy Qeinan Rebello. Another exhibition tie between Cosmos Academy coaches, featuring Akshay Anand, Anthony P, Minhaj P.A., and Mithun Deb, served as the tournament’s finale. The opening exhibition match was contested by Qeinan Rebello and Edith Maria.
Filomeno Alves, interim president of the Goan Community in Qatar, welcomed the gathering, while Peter Braganza, a key organizer, delivered the vote of thanks. Seby Mascarenhas and Anil D’Souza compered the event.
Encouraged by the overwhelming response, organizers announced that regular training and matches would follow, fostering long-term engagement in the sport among community members of all ages.
