Return with 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze; Australia claim top spot
India concluded their campaign at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Sunday with a creditable fourth-place finish, ending with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — despite drawing a blank on the final day of competition.
The Indian contingent held off hosts Scotland to finish behind Australia, England and Canada in the overall medal standings after staging a remarkable recovery following a slow start to the Games.
There were no additions to India’s medal tally on the concluding day as judoka Ishroop Narang narrowly missed out on bronze in the women’s -78kg event, losing to Canada’s Coralie Godbout in the bronze-medal bout. India’s hopes in track cycling also ended without a podium finish as Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam and the other cyclists finished outside the medal positions.
India’s fourth-place finish was built on a stunning penultimate day when the contingent collected 16 medals, led by a dominant boxing campaign. Indian boxers returned with seven gold and three silver medals, accounting for more than half of the country’s gold medals at the Games.
The para contingent also delivered its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance, winning seven medals, including three gold, while athletics and weightlifting made significant contributions to the overall tally.
The achievement assumes greater significance as the Glasgow Games featured only 10 sports, with medal-rich disciplines such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, cricket, hockey and squash left out of the programme, reducing India’s medal opportunities.
India will now turn its attention to the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad after the Games flag was formally handed over during the closing ceremony.
