Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) on Thursday celebrated the birth centenary of Evagrio Francisco Jorge at his residence in Carmona, honouring the life and legacy of the distinguished freedom fighter, writer,
and editor.

Born on March 6, 1925, in Carmona, South Goa, Jorge was a staunch opponent of Portuguese rule and actively participated in the freedom struggle.

Noted tiatrist and vice president of the Freedom Fighters’ Association, Cyriaco Dias, recalled Jorge’s sacrifices as a freedom fighter and activist. “Evagrio Jorge was a humble and down-to-earth individual who selflessly dedicated his life to the betterment of society, exemplifying the qualities of a true citizen,” he said, thanking DKA for commemorating the birth centenary of this illustrious Goan patriot.

DKA president Celso Fernandes said, “This is the first time I have visited Jorge’s house, and it is fitting that we are holding this programme to pay tribute to a man who played a vital role as both a freedom fighter and a writer.”

He also said that the Akademi will soon publish a book on Jorge’s works
and life.

Fr Roland Carvalho, parish priest of Our Lady of Socorro Church, Carmona, described Jorge as a “distinguished and compassionate individual who tirelessly worked for the betterment of society.”

DKA secretary Fr Myron Barreto urged the audience to emulate Jorge’s example in promoting justice, truth, and social welfare.

Jorge’s fervent activism led to three arrests and two imprisonments. He was involved in the Civil Disobedience Movement led by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia in Margao and later offered satyagraha at Cuncolim in November 1946, challenging colonial rule with unwavering determination.

Beyond his activism, Jorge made significant contributions to journalism and literature. Before 1954, he worked with leading newspapers such as O Heraldo, Diario de Goa, and Azad Goem, shaping public discourse with his fearless writings. Later, he joined All India Radio (AIR) as a senior-grade scriptwriter, serving in New Delhi, Mumbai, and eventually Goa. However, his commitment to Konkani journalism led him to resign from AIR and take on the role of Editor at the Konkani daily Uzvadd.

Sabina Martins, his daughter-in-law, proposed the vote of thanks at the commemoration event.

Present were also Subhas Naik, Jorge’s son and Vijayalakshmi, his daughter.

A prolific writer, Jorge authored numerous pamphlets and books in Portuguese, Konkani, and English, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.

Jorge passed away on August 20, 1978, but his contributions continue to inspire generations.

Carmona sarpanch Sandra Fernandes, DKA treasurer Afonso ‘Bond’ Braganza, Jorge’s family members, former colleagues, and villagers from Carmona were among the attendees.
