Candolim SC, St Savio SC battle for the title and a spot in GPL

Panaji: The GFA First Division title race heads into a dramatic final-day

showdown as St Savio SC take on Candolim Sports Club at the Duler Stadium today at 4 p.m., with the league title and GPL promotion spots still on the line.

Candolim go into the decisive clash as league leaders with 29 points from 11 matches, having

remained unbeaten throughout the campaign with nine wins and two draws.

A draw will be enough for Candolim to seal both the title and promotion, while St Savio must win to finish level on points and claim the championship on head-to-head record. St Savio, currently fourth with 26 points,

still have a realistic shot at both the title and promotion.

A victory would see them level Candolim on 29 points and hand them the championship on head-to-head record.

Even defeat may not completely end St Savio’s hopes. Their earlier 0-2 loss against Vagator PYSC is under review

after Vagator were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

If the result is overturned, St Savio could be awarded three points, while Vagator presently second with 28 points would face a deduction that could drop them to fifth.

Candolim come into the fixture after a 2-2 draw against South Goa United CSC, where Chaitan Komarpant and Siddhant Shirodkar were on target. Appu Swamy and Tenzin Namgyal scored for South Goa United.

St Savio, meanwhile, edged Panjim Footballers 3-2 in their previous outing. Mervin Dsouza, Nevil Menezes and Pedro Gonsalves found the net, while Vashon Rodrigues struck twice for Panjim Footballers.
