Alister’s goal goes in vain as they go down 1-2 to Delhi FC
Panaji: Sporting Clube de Goa suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat to Delhi FC in their I-League 2 clash at the Minerva Academy Ground on Monday, with the Flaming Oranje undone by a brace from Himanshu Jangra despite a spirited showing.
Delhi FC took the lead in the 19th minute when Jangra converted from a corner. Sporting responded with intent, earning multiple set-pieces, but were unable to find the equaliser before the break.
The visitors came out stronger in the second half and restored parity in the 51st minute through Alister Anthony, who finished calmly after Ayaan Shakeel had been cautioned for handball moments earlier.
However, Delhi regained the advantage in the 55th minute when Jangra converted from the penalty spot following a challenge by goalkeeper Avilash Paul.
Sporting continued to press for a second goal, with Sanson Pereira and Umair going close from free-kicks, but both efforts narrowly missed the target. Despite pushing forward in the closing stages, the Flaming Oranje were unable to break through a resolute Delhi defence.
