Bambolim: Srinivassa Sinai Dempo College of Commerce and Economics (Autonomous) has been crowned the Best College in Sports (Men) for the year 2024–25. The award was received by College Principal and Professor Dr. Manoj Kamat along with Sports Director Dr. Michael Dias from the Governor of Kerala, Rajendra Arlekar.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr Manoj Kamat highlighted the college’s holistic approach. “First, it’s about having the best sports infrastructure. Second, constant motivation and guidance from our trustees play a huge role. We make it a point to hire coaches even when they aren’t readily available so that our students don’t miss out,” he said. “Our gymnasium is among the best in Goa. We also support our athletes academically — adjusting timetables, engaging special classes, and helping with attendance when they’re away for competitions. Last year, we clinched the cricket title; this year, we added football. Being among the toppers across multiple sports is what truly sets us apart,” he added.

Dr. Kamat also acknowledged the challenges faced by urban colleges in traditional endurance sports. “We are a city-based college, and rural colleges often have an upper hand in events like marathon, running, kabaddi or kho-kho, thanks to the natural stamina of students from hilly or rural areas. Our students might be strong in strategy but not always in stamina. However, in sports like cricket, football, badminton, tennis, table tennis, and chess, we consistently perform well,” he explained. “Winning this title is a great inspiration to work harder in disciplines where urban colleges don’t usually have a competitive edge,” he concluded.

Sports Director Michael Dias attributed the success to broad participation and institutional backing. “We organise a lot of inter-class matches, which helps us identify the best talent. The management and principal have always supported us in hosting these events and running coaching camps,” he said.

Dias also stressed the importance of sports beyond competition. “My focus is on making health and fitness lifelong priorities, not just about winning medals. For example, in football alone, about 450 students from 27 to 30 classes participate in inter-class tournaments. Once we spot talent, we ensure proper coaching — even bringing in external coaches if needed,” he shared.
