Will enable automated sorting, increase recycling

Panaji: The state is set to embrace computer vision and AI models to analyse waste on conveyor belts to identify valuable recyclables like PET, HDPE, and LDPE plastics.  The first phase of the project will focus on enhancing dry waste recovery at the Saligao and Cacora facilities.

The system will analyse real-time data from cameras at segregation units to enable automated sorting, reducing manual labour and increasing recycling rates.

“This project sets a blueprint for integrating AI into public infrastructure,” said a GWMC official. “By boosting recovery rates and efficiency, we are building a model for sustainable cities.”

The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has signed a MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) and United Way Hyderabad to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for waste management optimisation.

The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Education’s “Make AI in India” programme. While leveraging AI technologies to improve waste characterisation, recycling efficiency, and reduce environmental impact, the project also includes predictive modeling to forecast waste composition based on geographic and seasonal trends, optimising workforce deployment.

AI will monitor worker productivity and fatigue, improving safety and operational efficiency.

Future phases will expand AI applications to broader waste streams and focus on reducing environmental impact.
