St John Ambulance, Goa State Branch (SJAG), conducted an educational session at St Mary’s Convent High School, Mapusa, to raise awareness among students of Classes 8 and 9 about the harmful effects of added sugars and the benefits of consuming whole foods.
SJAG secretary general, Jovito Lopes, urged students to reduce or eliminate added sugars in their diet and focus on natural sugars found in fruits, vegetables, and dairy, which also provide essential nutrients and fiber.
He explained the difference between natural sugars and added sugars like table sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and syrups hidden in packaged foods. A diet high in added sugars, he said, can lead to obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver disease (MASLD).
Lopes highlighted the recommended sugar intake: no more than 9 teaspoons for men, 6 for women, 5 for children under 18, and none for children under 2. He warned that most people unknowingly exceed these limits through sugary drinks, processed snacks, and cereals.
Students were advised to avoid energy drinks, fizzy beverages, and packaged sweets, and instead choose whole foods, healthy snacks, and plenty of clean water. “Natural sugars in fruits and dairy, when consumed in moderation, offer health benefits.”
The session also touched on important aspects of overall well-being, including sleep, exercise, nutrition, and mental health. The programme was coordinated by Sister Joy AC, Ashwini Morajkar, and Royston D’Sousa, and organised by Sionora Pinto under the guidance of principal Sister Snehala AC.
