The Government Veterinary Hospital at Tonca is successfully handling between 60 and 80 pet cases daily, with an 80-90 per cent recovery rate achieved through consistent follow-up, said an official at the hospital.
“Most of the cases we receive respond well to treatment and show good recovery with regular check-ups,” said the official.
The hospital is currently treating a wide range of conditions in animals, including tick-borne infections, skin (dermatological) conditions, gastrointestinal diseases, orthopaedic problems, and various viral and bacterial infections.
According to hospital staff, some diseases show seasonal trends. Viral gastroenteritis in dogs often occurs during weather changes, while tick-borne infections and feline panleukopenia—a serious viral illness in cats—are commonly reported during the monsoon. These cases have been frequently treated at the hospital in recent weeks.
Stray small animals brought to the hospital are treated free of charge and referred to PAWS for in-house admission if needed. Large stray animals are similarly treated and referred to goshalas for extended care.
While medical supplies for large animals are currently sufficient, the hospital has flagged the need for more medicines specific to small animals. Services at the hospital are offered for a nominal charge of Rs 100.
