Two brothers lost their lives after being electrocuted by a live wire laid on the ground to protect farmland from wild animals at Zamblemol Sisorem, under the Rivona village panchayat area in Sanguem taluka.

The Quepem police rushed to the site after they received information from zilla panchayat member Suresh Kepekar about the  tragedy.

Upon reaching the site, the police discovered the bodies of Rajendra Gaonkar (46) and his brother Mohandas Gaonkar (40), lying in a forested area at Zamblemol. The brothers were residents of Pandav Sada,
Rivona.

The police said  the brothers had gone to cut grass for their cattle. On their way back, they accidentally came into contact with live electric wires that had been laid on the ground by a farm owner in an attempt to kill wild boars.

An inquest panchanama was conducted, and the bodies were shifted to South Goa District Hospital in Margao for medico-legal procedures.

According to their neighbours, the siblings lived with their elderly mother, who suffers from diabetes. They were unmarried, and  supported the household by tending to a few cattle, relying solely on the sale of milk for income.

The brothers leave behind married sisters.

Residents of the area expressed deep sorrow and anger over the incident, demanding a thorough investigation by the police and local authorities.

They also urged the government to take strict measures to ensure that such preventable tragedies do not occur in the future.

Lady police sub-inspector Joycee Carvalho is investigating  the case.
