River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai, on Monday, said that the government will stop the roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferryboat services on the Chorao-Ribandar route, if the local panchayat representatives and the MLA give a representation to him that the earlier services of conventional ferryboats were better.
“Ro-Ro ferries are a new technology because of which the traffic gets cleared faster during peak hours. But these days out of curiosity and as an experience, tourists and other people also cross this route using Ro-Ro ferryboats. This has resulted into 30% increase in the traffic flow,” he said.
Phal Dessai said that scooterists also coming and waiting on the ramps first adds to the chaos.
“My request to all the members of Chodan-Madel panchayat is that if they do not like this service and they prefer to go to old services, we can do that. If they find the services of six conventional ferryboats better, then they should simply give me a representation saying that these Ro-Ro ferryboats cannot take the load and these are not better than the earlier services. So, we can remove them,” he said.
“We have not constructed these Ro-Ro ferryboats with government money. We will stop it,” he said.
