Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) will set up the World Peace University (WPU) Goa, a private university at Tivim in Bardez taluka, in the forthcoming academic year 2026-27, with classes opening from September 5.
Altogether, 500 students will be admitted to the university in its opening year.
The university will initially offer 10 educational programmes, including three engineering courses, computer science, energy system, communication, design, liberal arts, business management studies in management science, and film, media and creative arts, among others.
Around five per cent of the work of the university, to be set up on 50 acres of Communidade land, is complete. The academic block of the university would be ready in six months, while the rest of the campus would be ready in two years.
Stating that WPU Goa would adopt a transdisciplinary method of education, the president of the MIT Group of Institutions and WPU Goa, Dr Rahul Karad, said that all degree programmes of the university would be connected with societal
transformation.
He also said that WPU Goa will be a 100 per cent residential university and that each student would be charged an annual fee of
Rs 7.5 lakh. “The first batch of students would pass out in 2030,” he said, adding that the fee would cover academics, accommodation, food, industrial tours, study tours to a European and an Asian country, and visits to places in India.
The university will further focus on sports, with associated aspects.
Eminent educationist associated with the university, Hridayesh Deshpande, said that besides academics, students will also benefit from international, national and social immersion. “In addition, right from the first year they will be exposed to research, with nine centres of excellence to be set up at the university,” he said.
It was also informed that the university will follow reservations for state-based SC, ST and OBC students. In addition, five per cent of students will receive free education on merit basis.
