The Goan folk dances of samai and ghode modni, the heritage Kunbi textile, and sweet delicacies like patoleo and dodol will be a part of the grand Independence Day reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan this year.

Conceived as a celebration of India’s rich cultural diversity, the event will highlight sustainable environmental practices and living art traditions of the states of Chhattisgarh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Around 35 artists from the four states are expected to present at the reception.

Also known as Divlyanchi Nach, the traditional Samai folk dance features performers dancing while balancing brass lamps on their heads. Ghode Modni meanwhile honours the bravery of warriors of yore where the dancers carry effigies of horses and do a choreography with swords to the beats of percussion. These dances will have music accompaniment from traditional music instruments like ghumat, shamel and kasale.

The event will also have table runners featuring the traditional crafts and textiles associated with these states. The Kunbi textile will be a representation of Goa. The proposed menu for the evening will bring together regional specialities from the four states
including the patoleo and dodol from Goa.
