The vocational centre at Sanjay Centre for Special Education in Porvorim is set to be get a new building, which will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 7 crore on a 1,500 sqm plot at PDA Colony, Porvorim.
According to officials of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), which is overseeing the project, the tendering process is under way, and construction is expected to commence within the next three months once the work order is finalised.
The vocational centre had remained closed for 18 months following a tragic accident, leaving students without access to specialised education and training.
“The prolonged closure had impacted 110 students, many with severe disabilities, leading to behavioural and emotional challenges due to disrupted routines,” said Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) president Avelino D’Sa and parents.
“The reopening of the centre will restore structured learning and essential vocational training for the students,” said D’Sa.
The redevelopment includes the construction of both higher secondary and vocational sections to cater to students with disabilities.
A source said the building’s design prioritises safety and aesthetics, incorporating open spaces that can serve as a playground. The facade will feature a combination of colour blocking and dynamic roof forms supported by an exposed stone wall.
