Calangute MLA Michael Lobo says demolition under way on GCZMA order
Mapusa: Concerned over alleged illegal construction in a private property in a No Development Zone, Vagator residents gathered near the beach on Sunday, demanding action against those carrying out the work on a private land only to be assured by the
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo that no illegal work was under way.
“Work on removing debris is being carried out as per the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority’s (GCZMA) direction,” Lobo told the locals as he claimed that the land belonged to his relatives.
Residents, who had been alerted by a viral video, suspected a wooden cottage project was being planned at the site.
“The video showed sand dunes and vegetation being destroyed,” said a resident Ravi Harmalkar, questioning how the GCZMA had granted permission despite the presence of sand dunes and turtle nesting sites.
However, Lobo, who visited the site, told the locals that three illegal structures with electricity
connections had come up on the property, prompting a complaint to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which restored the ownership.
“GCZMA had issued a demolition order, and the structures were removed. We are only clearing debris and have permission to put up fencing to protect our property. No new work is being undertaken,” Lobo said.
