Hunter held for accidentally shooting companion dead

A 34-year-old man from Maharashtra, Abhijit Narayan Desai, was arrested for allegedly accidentally shooting dead his companion Hemant Hirba Desai during a hunting expedition in a cashew plantation at Fulasaryo, Advoi in Sattari taluka.

According to sub-divisional police officer Jivba Dalvi, Abhijit  was hunting with his companion Hemant on April 10 at 9 pm. Abhijit accidentally fired a gunshot that hit Hemant, causing fatal injuries.

Hemant was moved to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police arrested Abhijit and seized the firearm with an empty cartridge, and a scooter from the crime scene.

The accused has been remanded to five-day police custody.  

The firearm used in the shooting did not have a valid licence, it was disclosed.  

The Valpoi police station registered a complaint filed by the victim’s uncle and charged Abhijit under Section 105 read with Section 3(5) of the BNS 2023, Section 3 read with sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act, and Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

The police conducted a scene-of-offence panchanama with the help of a forensic expert team.

The police are working to gather more evidence and get clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The probe is led by police inspector Videsh Shirodkar of the Valpoi police station, under the supervision of North Goa superintendent of police Akshat Kaushal and Dalvi.
