The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) is launching a fresh round of sterilisation drives targeting stray dogs in both North and South Goa.

The AH&VS director Nitin Naik said that staff will be deployed daily to carry out neutering operations in both districts, with dedicated officials working region-wise.

In North Goa, procedures will take place at Noah’s Animal Care Shelter, while in South Goa, the operations will be conducted at People for Animals (PFA).

ā€œOur staff is trained to handle the sterilisation of around 30 dogs per day,ā€ said Naik.

However, he said the actual number of daily procedures will depend on how many dogs are caught and brought in by the collaborating NGOs.

A recently concluded sterilisation camp in South Goa neutered around 562 dogs. Focus will now shift to North Goa, where a fresh sterilisation campaign is scheduled to begin.

Director and Educator at Mission Rabies, Dr Murugan Appupillai said that AH&VS and Mission Rabies had earlier collaborated on a campaign that saw over 500 dogs being sterilised.

The joint initiative, which commenced on April 1, had concluded on April 19.

The upcoming phase will cover beaches in North Goa and involve participation of the Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS), AH&VS, and local NGOs.
